This site may not work for everyone. I use certain software that not everyone uses, and it works fine for me. But I haven't really done much testing on other browsers - say, Firefox and Safari and Opera and such. It is one of the things I'd like to get done, but I'm afraid that I don't have a whole lot of time to do a ton of tweaking. Still, that is one of the items on my to-do list, so keep that in mind. :)

Recommended Software [ALL FREE]

This software will pretty much ensure that you view this site the way it was meant to be viewed.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

Chances are you already have this. If not, it's not too hard to get... in fact, I'd say it's downright easy:

Download for Windows

They haven't made a Mac version for a long time, so Safari (or Firefox or whatever) will have to do...

RANT: I know, I know, IE is uncool, Firefox is "in." Still, the majority of the computer-using world uses Internet Explorer, so it makes sense to optimize everything for it. I'm not sure if there are any specific issues in Firefox - but again, I'm planning and looking into it. (And Firefox users, thank me for not harassing you with splash ads or even locking you out entirely like these folks want webmasters to do with IE... they're becoming the very thing they're fighting - dictators, forcing a browser upon users.) END RANT. Oh, and non-militant Firefox users, use away. I'm not trying to be mean. Just ranting. And militant Firefox users? No offense. :) Besides, Blake Ross, from  the sound of it, is a very good, sane, practical, sensible guy. I was impressed by how unbiased he was. Good man. :)

Apple QuickTime

Handy program, pretty good at playing music and videos.

Download for Windows
Download for Mac

As an added bonus, the QuickTime web site had perhaps the best selection of movie trailers on the web.

Adobe Flash Player (ex-Macromedia Flash)

Flash is commonly used across the web for games, animations, and other interactive features. It isn't used too much around this site, but it is used, and it's rather dandy I think... dandy enough that I have a section dedicated to it, anyway. :)

Download

Adobe Shockwave Player (ex-Macromedia Shockwave)

Shockwave is used across the web for games and other interactive content. It's pretty rare on this site, only popping up in one game or so, but it's still handy-dandy to have.

Recommended Settings

It's recommended that you view this site at a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher. If it's lower, the pages may be a bit oversize; if it's smaller, undersize.

To change your computer monitor resolution in Windows XP:

  1. Go to the desktop (a.k.a. minimize all windows)
  2. Right click on any empty space (not on an icon) and click "Properties"
  3. Click the "Settings" tab at the top
  4. Use the slider in the lower right to change your resolution

It is not necessary to change your resolution, but it is recommended, as it affects viewing of the entire site. If you've been running at lower resolution, you'll be amazed by how much nicer everything looks... that is, if you can still read everything. :)
