While many say it doesn't
live up to its much-vaunted predecessor, Return of
the Jedi is, all in all, a worthy finale to the Star Wars saga.
The film starts off with a
daring rescue mission in which Luke and his friends must infiltrate the vile
gangster Jabba the Hutt's giant palace in order to free Han from carbonite. As
the movie continues, Luke returns to Dagobah to see Yoda once more -- and learns
of another interesting family member.
Once Luke and Yoda are done
with their philosophical rambling, it's time for some more action. As Mon Mothma
puts it, "The Emperor has made a critical error and the time for our attack has
come." Rebel spies have learned of the construction of a bigger and better Death
Star II. Once completed, it will be completely impenetrable.
Fortunately, it's not done
yet. It's up to Admiral Ackbar, General Calrissian, and General Solo to lead an
attack on the mammoth space station. Best of all, it turns out that Emperor
Palpatine -- the ruler of the galaxy -- will actually be onboard the space
station for the final stages of construction. It's a flawless plan... assuming,
of course, that the bad guys have no idea that you're coming.
Return of the Jedi
features the most planets of any "original trilogy" movie. It's got Tatooine,
Dagobah, Endor, Naboo, Bespin, and Coruscant. (Note that half of those come from
the celebration at the end.) It's got the cute and cuddly Ewoks, the Death Star
II, and plenty of ships. All in all, it's a great finale to a great saga.
Yippee!
