Labyrinth of Evil
by James Luceno

Review:
Labyrinth of Evil takes place in the months leading up to Revenge of the Sith, and ends mere minutes before the movie begins. While it starts off good, it ends great. It has mystery, humor, and action. Best of all, it sets the stage for the rise of the Empire and the fall of the Jedi.

I don't have a single complaint about this book. It's excellent from start to finish, and includes tons of fun references to other events, from the Battle of Mon Calamari to the murder of former Chancellor Valorum. Those references may confuse you if you aren't a big fan, but if you get them they really tie the Clone Wars together.

I highly recommend Labyrinth of Evil to anyone remotely interested in the events leading up to Episode III.

Summary:
Labyrinth of Evil tells the tale of a host of Jedi as the travel the galaxy hunting down the mysterious Darth Sidious, leader of the Separatist revolt. The war has gone on for three long years, and now the two sides are practically at a stalemate. Everyone is determined to end the conflict once and for all.

The Jedi, and the Republic, know that the way to do that is to take out the Separatist leadership. That won't be easy, though -- many key players have fled to the Outer Rim, and their whereabouts are unknown.

However, the discovery of a communications device yields temping clues as to the identity of Darth Sidious, and Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi are dispatched to track down Sidious. As they find more and more clues, though, they are led right back to the heart of the galaxy: Coruscant. There, Mace Windu and an elite special operations unit continue the hunt.

Just as they finally seem to be on the verge of a momentous discovery, though, Coruscant suddenly comes under attack. It would seem that General Grievous is desperately trying to strike a fatal blow to his enemy. Mace Windu is called away to  fight, and what follows is the best climax I think I've ever seen in a book.

Labyrinth of Evil easily deserve five stars out of five.
