New Jedi Order: Star by Star
by Troy Denning
Review:
Star by Star is definitely a big landmark in the war against the Yuuzhan Vong.
Fortunately, the events within get the treatment they deserve: the writing is
consistently excellent. Troy Denning, newcomer to the Star Wars universe, is to
be congratulated.
This book is full of action, from epic space battles to
the much more personal exploits of Anakin Solo's Jedi task force. The voxyn make
for excellent, terrifying enemies. The book is plenty long, at about 520 pages.
Sometimes, that means that my mind expects a climax coming when there is none...
then again, it leaves a lot more room for the storytelling. Some books are meant
to be only a couple hundred pages. This is not one of them.
Star by Star is an excellent book overall. Unlike some
books, the galaxy is not the same at the end as it was at the beginning -- this
one really matters. I give it a full five stars out of five.
Summary :
Twenty-five years after the destruction of the first Death
Star, the Yuuzhan Vong, a strange species from beyond the rim of the galaxy, has
invaded. Seemingly unstoppable, they have torn through world after world. Their living,
bioengineered weapons are unlike anything the galaxy has ever seen, and it is
taking all the might of the New Republic to escape complete annihilation.
Now, the enemy has unleashed an insanely
powerful Force-sensitive monster, the voxyn. As Jedi after Jedi fall to its
sharp claws, petrifying shrieks, and deadly venom, Anakin Solo, son of Han and
Leia, devises a dangerous plan. He and a group of a dozen other Jedi must allow
themselves to be captured, sneak into enemy territory, and destroy the voxyn
queen -- the one voxyn from which all others are cloned. It won't be easy,
though -- and many will die.
Meanwhile, the Yuuzhan Vong are advancing on
Coruscant and preparing millions of refugees for a horrible sacrifice to the
gods. It is a turning point in the war; things will never be the same again.
