If you've already read my review of Burnout 2, you know what to expect. Basically, Burnout 3 is an insane racing game with an extreme emphasis on utter destruction. The Burnout series is well-known for its spectacular crashes, and this latest installment is no exception. In addition to the basic Race and Crash modes Burnout fans are already familiar with, Takedown offers something new, something so wonderfully fun that they decided to name the whole game after it: Takedowns. A takedown is when you slam an opponent's car off a bridge, into oncoming traffic, into a pillar, and so on. Takedown mode is, amazingly, even more addicting than Crash mode. I love it! The graphics of Burnout 3 are amazing. The cars look great, the environments look great, and -- best of all -- the crashes look great. Every time you get a Takedown (well, not every time, but almost always) time slows for a few seconds and you get a nice, good look at the hunk of flying metal that was, until moments ago, a tough opponent. And the opponents are tough. The AI is good enough -- other cars will try to slam you into walls, too -- but if you're still not satisfied you can take your racing online. Online, of course, things can get tougher, since no AI can match the determination and creativity of a living, breathing human. I VERY highly recommend Burnout 3. It's not only a fun racing game, but it's also a fun crashing game. Five stars out of five. |
