MechAssault was one of the first games available on Xbox LIVE, and boy is it a good one. Here's the basic idea: stomp around in a giant robot (your "mech"), generally wreaking havoc and such. Sounds fun, doesn't it? It is -- especially when playing online. They are many different mechs to choose from. Each comes equipped with three weapons. Some come with "jump jets," which let you travel short distances through the air. Others come with cloaking devices that make you invisible, both to radar and to the naked eye. Even if that was all, it would be a great game. Fortunately, it isn't all. Every single object is capable of being destroyed in MechAssault, whether it be a giant skyscraper, a bridge, or a lamppost. Sometimes it's strategic -- what better way to humiliate your enemy than to drop a building on his head? Other times it's just fun. You can play with two players offline, but that's not all that great. Online, though, is really fun. There are several modes, ranging from a free-for-all to Capture the Flag to sort of King-of-the-Hill-type games. To top it all off, additional mechs, maps and game modes can be downloaded -- for free! -- off of Xbox LIVE. All in all, a great game. However, for even more features -- feel like driving around a tank, or perhaps a helicopter thingy? -- MechAssault 2 would be an even better choice. |
