The original Project Gotham Racing was one of the four games we had for Xbox on Christmas Day, 2001. My older brother John and I pretty much played it straight through that vacation, and managed to get to the Very Hard difficulty level by the end of that vacation. So, you can imagine my glee when the sequel turned up on Christmas Day 2003. The sequel adds online play, new modes, and plenty of new cars. This time around, John and I focused on online play -- and for good reason. It's amazing. It's the best racing experience I've ever had. Playing online, against real people who occasionally make real mistakes, was quite a relief after the original, in which an imperfect first turn could lose you the race. Of course, multiplayer isn't the only reason for playing. Single player is just as good. Best of all, all of your scores on every single race you complete are immediately uploaded to Xbox LIVE and right there for you to see when you finish. Single player also features a sort of Time Trial feature, in which you race against the clock -- and yourself. After you finish one lap, a "ghost" of yourself from the previous lap begins to race with you. So, you can see exactly how well you did on that lap, and try to beat it. Since everything is integrated into Xbox LIVE, you can even race against the ghosts of other people. Up for a challenge? Why not download the ghost of the #1 ranked player worldwide to race against on your favorite track? Or, you can upload your own ghosts for your friends to play against. All in all, Project Gotham Racing 2 is an excellent game, and definitely worth picking up for any racing fan. For information on the next big racer on Xbox, Forza Motorsport, click here. |
