Action, drama, romance, humor -- what more could you want? Four and a half stars out of five. Pirates of the Caribbean is an action-packed adventure concerning a ship of cursed pirates who can't die, a blacksmith, and a rich daughter of a governor. It's full of swordfights, plot twists, and humor. Johnny Depp steals the show as the wacky Captain Jack Sparrow, which is one of the highlights of the movie. The swordfighting is great, as the characters jump around, fight on ceiling rafters, and propel each other through the air on makeshift see-saws. The whole immortal-pirate thing also adds a twist, since no matter how much you smash them they just can't die. All in all, Pirates of the Caribbean is a movie that completely deserves the sequels it's getting. Four and a half stars out of five. The Black Pearl is a legendary ship crewed by the undead and faster than any other. The residents of a British colony, of course, would have no reason to believe in such a ridiculous thing -- until they're attacked by it. Amid the chaos, the pirates capture Elizabeth Swann, the daughter of the colony's governor. Elizabeth happens to be in possession of a very valuable piece of Aztec gold, and -- in return for the gold -- the pirates agree to cease their bombardment of the colony. They then take Elizabeth off to their secret island base. Meanwhile, back at the colony, Will Turner tries to get support for a rescue mission. He unfortunately gets none, and thus turns to the imprisoned pirate Jack Sparrow for help. Jack agrees, and thus they both escape and steal a ship. Not very nice of them -- they could have just asked -- but oh well. :-) The movie culminates in a great big multi-tiered battle involving hordes of immortal pirates, the British Navy, and our less-than-loyal friend Jack Sparrow. Definitely worth the watch. |
